The Pull List! July 29, 2009

In The Pull List! on July 27, 2009 at 3:17 pm

Well, folks, it’s that time again, where we take a look at the comics you need to pick up.  Marvel did exactly as we expected, dumping every single “Dark Reign” related book this week, as well as finally releasing the final issue of the easily forgotten “Ultimatum” event.  Meanwhile DC actually eased off it’s current event, “Blackest Night”, probably because it’s two strongest books, “Superman” and “Detective Comics” come out this week.  All in all, a somewhat disappointing week for the Marvel Zombies, but Johnny DCs are going to be foaming at the mouth.  Hit the jump to find out what’s notable this week, and remember that just because I didn’t put it on the list doesn’t mean it isn’t good.

The Pull List! July 22, 2009

In The Pull List! on July 21, 2009 at 4:32 am

Well, we’re experimenting with the format of The Pull List again this week.  Why back to a written article?  Well, first off, I had to reformat my computer and haven’t reinstalled my video editing software.  Secondly, the only comment I got regarding the format last week said WRITTEN! so, we’re written.  *shrug* Leave a comment if you disagree or agree, and don’t forget that just because it isn’t on the list doesn’t mean it isn’t good.

Marvel’s surprisingly good First Class stories continue, this time with the second team of X-Men and a surprise appearance by the Inhumans, in probably one of the better Nightcrawler centric stories we’ve seen in a while.  Spoilers within!

"Messiah War" Review

X-Force/Cable: Messiah War

X-Force/Cable: Messiah War

“Messiah War” Parts 1 – 7

Writer: Dwayne Swierczynski (Cable); Craig Kyle & Christopher Yost (X-Force)

Artists: Ariel Olivetti (Cable); Clayton Crain (X-Force)

I know, I know.  I rant and rave too much about the X-Men’s current direction.  Yes, there have been some missteps.  Yes, there have been some misled, horrible arcs (”Sisterhood”, I’m glaring at you).  But “Messiah CompleX” set a new direction for the brave new world of Marvel’s merry mutants, after their numbers were reduced to around 187 post “M Day”.  “Messiah CompleX” was announcd as the first part of a trilogy of stories, and the second part is here in a crossover between the surprisingly well written and undeniably popular Cable and X-Force, titled “Messiah War”.

I’ve made no bones about having some serious love for the post-Messiah CompleX X-Men Universe.  They’ve always been one of Marvel’s biggest sellers, and are consistently strong titles, but the entire Universe has become a fairly solid, tangible thing ever since Messiah CompleX ended (Well, excluding that recent Sisterhood mess).  But in the world of the Dark Reign, the X-Men have essentially been left to their own devices in their new safe haven of San Francisco, while Norman Osborn marches onward throughout the rest of the Marvel Universe, tearing up everything he sees before him.  Finally, the two paths collide with the six part “Utopia” storyline.
