Jason Todd. He was the second Robin, and after a controversial fan vote, he was killed by The Joker in the classic “A Death In The Family“. But in 2003, during Jeph Loeb’s acclaimed storyline “Hush”, the seeds were planted for the return of Jason Todd, a resurrection which was eventually revealed in Judd Winck’s 2005 storyline “Under The Hood” and its sequel, “Family Reunion“.

But what has happened to Jason Todd lately? With all that’s going on during “Battle For The Cowl”, we seem to have lost sight of the Jason who was resurrected. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the post-resurrection Jason Todd and try to find some clues as to what’s going on.

Review: "Batman: Battle For The Cowl" #2

Batman: Battle For The Cowl #2 (Of 3)Batman: Battle For The Cowl #2 (Of 3)

The second issue of Battle For The Cowl is here, but can we really say anything more about this series?  It picks up right where the second one left off, with a mysterious second Batman showing up and being identified with a less than shocking reveal (hint: its exactly who you think it is), and the majority of the issue is comprised of this Batman fighting with Tim, while Black Mask’s soldiers attack GCPD and Dick gets all sad and vindictive in the Batcave.

And that’s it.  Nothing really happens in this issue.  Yeah, there’s that last page, but c’mon.  You really think anything serious is going to come of that?  Because this is the second issue of the three part mini, there’s not a lot to happen here, and as a result we’re left with a lot of unresolved threads and lackluster action.  And how is it that Tim, who just bested Lady Shiva in the last issue of his own series, got his ass handed to him so readily in this issue?  And wasn’t Damien trained by the freaking League of Assassins?  There’s a lot of out of character moments and a lot of non exciting action, but hey, the Birds of Prey show up halfway through for their obligatory one panel appearance.  Oh, Batgirl and Spoiler on that cover?  Hope you enjoyed that, because they’re nowhere to be found in this issue.  And wasn’t Wildcat supposed to show up?  Where’s he so far?

There’s basically a whole lot of nothing in this issue, and with only one issue left to wrap it up, there’s a lot of concern as to whether or not the changes this series promises to bring about will be worthwhile.  Besides, I think we all know who’s going to wind up in the cowl at the end, don’t we?

Final Grade: D.  Here’s hoping #3 can pull a turn around.

The Pull List! Week of April 08, 2009

In The Pull List! on April 6, 2009 at 10:00 pm

Normally, I do a much bigger Pull List than this. But this week, we’re only highlighting one issue from each company. Why? Because its a really short week. There’s some strong stuff coming out, but nothing that I can really do a whole write-up about. That said, don’t get your hopes down. Its still a really strong week, just not a week with a large number of releases…and really, isn’t that better on your wallet?

Review: "Batman: Battle For The Cowl" #1 (Of 3)

With “Final Crisis” now far behind us, the new question is not “What the hell is this!?” but rather, “Who is the new Batman?”.  Tony Daniel has stepped in to examine this, and the result is “Battle For The Cowl”.

The title starts off decent enough, and the first issue is obviously meant to create a series of plot lines, but it does feel like a lot for a three issue mini.  The obvious friction is lies between Dick Grayson and Tim Drake, who have conflicing ideals about the future of the Batman persona.  While Tim believes Batman is a neccessity to save Gotham, Dick believes that there should not, nay could not, be another Batman.  Meanwhile, Batman villain Black Mask is alive again (inexplicably), and there’s another nutjob prowling Gotham, claiming to be Batman.

Daniel’s does a passable job, but the writing seems a bit clustered and confusing.  He also seems to be having some difficulty with the characters: Damien Wayne, shown over the past 2 years to be trained by the League of Assassins and formidable in his own right, is reduced to a whining brat in this issue.  There’s also the last page, which the title seems to push to just so you can spend a month guessing the identity of the new Batman.

There are some beautifully rendered scenes, including Tim prowling Gotham in a late 70s/early 80s styled Bat-suit.  There’s also guest appearance galore, with pretty much anyone who’s every active Gotham vigilante showing up in some way shape or form.

In short, the mini is hard to judge at this point, but it does seem to be shaping up to be pretty good.  Daniel’s art is clearly where he’ll shine, but at this point it stands to see if the story will stand up to par with it.  This is still going to be the DC title to watch over the next few months, and shows a lot of promise.  Its not a bad issue, its just evidently meant as a springboard for the series of larger events coming down the road.
