Horror Haven: Horror DVD Releases (July 29th, 2009)

In On Film on July 27, 2009 at 8:00 am

ZombieAfter a pretty dull month for horror releases, this month somewhat makes up for it. Find out what horror DVD’s are the best for your buck after the jump!

CombatShock

Nearly 25 years after its original release, Combat Shock returns from the cult underground to reclaim its title as perhaps the most shocking independent film of the ’80s. Writer/director/producer Buddy Giovinazzo made his indelible debut with this nihilistic saga of a Vietnam vet’s desperate pursuit to save his family from the horrors of poverty and urban squalor. Culminating in one of the most brutal climaxes ever committed to celluloid, this unforgiving masterwork remains as controversial and relevant as it was at the height of Reagan’s America. Get ready to be blown away: Combat Shock is back like you’ve never seen it before.

– Before finding out that Combat Shock had a 2-disc version coming, I purchased the previous single-disc release. I had heard numerous things about this infamous film, so naturally I was eager to check it out. Personally, I didn’t find the film to be that good (minus the last 15 minutes or so). But if you want to see this movie, check out this version. Hey, if nothing else, at least you’ll be supporting Troma.

TorsoA series of sex murders shock a college campus, and four beautiful young girlfriends head for the safety of an isolated country villa. But as they succumb to their own erotic desires, their weekend of pleasure becomes a vacation to dismember at the hands – and blade – of the lecherous maniac.

*PICK OF THE WEEK*

– Much like Combat Shock, this is another movie that I’ve been told is a necessary watch for any horror fan. Finally I will have my chance to see this movie, so I must admit I am a bit excited about this particular release. Hence, it’s my pick of the week.

10thVictimIt is the 21st Century, and society’s lust for violence is satisfied by “The Big Hunt,” an international game of legalized murder. But when the sport’s two top assassins (Marcello Mastroianni and Ursula Andress) are pitted against each other, they find that love is the most dangerous game of all. As the world watches, the hunt is on. Who will become THE 10TH VICTIM?

– Yet again, this is one of those movies I haven’t had a chance to see. I have heard both good and bad about the film, but after reading that synopsis, how could I not pick this up?

RepulsionRoman Polanski followed up his international breakthrough, Knife in the Water, with this controversial, chilling tale of psychosis, starring Catherine Deneuve as Carole, a fragile, frigid young beauty cracking up over the course of a terrifying weekend. Left alone by her vacationing sister in their London flat, Carole is haunted by specters real and imagined, and her insanity grows to a violent pitch. Thanks to its unforgettable attention to disturbing detail and Polanski’s unparalleled adeptness at turning claustrophobic space into an emotional minefield, Repulsion remains one of cinema’s most shocking psychological thrillers.

– It has been quite some time since I initially watched Repulsion. I must say, Roman Polanksi did a great job with this film. This is the Criterion Collection release, so pick it up if you have the extra cash.

DollhouseS1From Joss Whedon comes a new groundbreaking show starring Eliza Dushku as Echo, an operative in an underground organization that provides hired personas for various missions.

– Sure, it’s not particularly horror, but I will include this for all you Whedon fans out there. It took me a while to get into this show, but it eventually grew on me. It certainly improved over the course of the season.

  1. Great post! Just wanted to let you know you have a new subscriber- me!

  2. I watched Combat Shock not too long ago and it was definitely one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen in my life. Nothing happens throughout the entire movie until you get to the last 10 or so minutes. It was just boring and extremely low budget.

  3. Just wanted to say HI. I found your blog a few days ago on Technorati and have been reading it over the past few days.
