Musicians You Should Know:: Part 3

Deviating a bit from my past inductions, today I want to introduce you to a band that hails from Nirvana-based territory of Olympia, Washington that certainly doesn’t fall into the “grunge” category. This band is none other than a black metal band named Wolves in the Throne Room.

Now when most people think of Black Metal they probably think of bands like Mayhem or Gorgoroth. Well, Wolves in the Throne Room is a bit different from that. Their sound has a more ambient vibe to it. Even though the band accepts the label of being a Black Metal band, they are also quick to say that they’re not restricted to any musical label, and you’ll quickly see that to be the case once you listen to one of their albums. You can find a whole slew of sounds and influences on their albums. You’ll get everything from black metal (of course), crust punk, thrash, doom metal, and at times, even folk. To say it’s a trip to listen to a Wolves in the Throne Room album is a bit of an understatement.

This is certainly a band that has a sound unlike most you have heard. Like my previous inductions of Hank III and Unknown Hinson, these are guys that I respect a great deal because they don’t feel like they have to adhere to one certain genre. And lets face it, in the heavy metal world, that’s certainly a feeling that isn’t mutual amongst many bands.

  1. I listened to a few of their songs on youtube and the sound quality was horrible. They would be a whole lot better if it didn’t sound like they recorded it in a garage.
