Review: Marilyn Manson – The High End of Low

Come with me, if you will, on a journey back to the year of 1996. Bill Clinton occupied the White House, the Olympic games were rolling into Atlanta, and the music industry was abuzz with the sounds of chatter over a new album that had been released. That album? Marilyn Manson’s AntiChrist Superstar. With that release, Marilyn Manson made his name in the music industry and struck fear into God-fearing hearts all across the land. From that landmark album Manson went on to create many other great listens like Mechanical Animals, Holy Wood, and yes, I even thought Golden Age of Grotesque was a good album. And don’t get me wrong, I know I am leaving out Portrait of an American Family (which came out before Antichrist Superstar). POAF was still a great listen, but lets face it, Antichrist was his breakthrough moment. Anyway, after Golden Age, Manson delivered Eat Me, Drink Me. It was a downturn, to say the least. Personally, I listened to the album once and forgot it existed.
High End of Low doesn’t mark a return to glory for Manson, though it is considerably better than Eat Me, Drink Me. If you didn’t know, Manson’s longtime friend Twiggy left the band once upon a time. High End of Low marks the return of Twiggy, so you can probably see why a lot of people had high hopes for this album. I was one of those people. Well dear readers, as you may imagine, I had my hopes crushed upon placing this CD into my CD player and hitting the play button.
The album is basically a slightly “meaner” version of Eat Me, Drink Me. Maybe I am completely wrong in saying this, but Marilyn Manson has become every stereotypical Hot Topic shopper. Supposedly this album is about the recent breakups Manson has faced, but you would honestly expect him to come out swinging at least a little. Pretty as a Swastika is the only song on the album that didn’t completely bore me to tears. Sure, you could argue that Manson is just progressing and growing up as an artist. To that I would reply, “He’s nearly 40 and has a song on his album called Arma-Goddamn-Motherfucking-Geddon”.
I really hate to bash Manson. I definitely respect him and love his older music, but I just wish he would “unleash the fury” again and become the thing parents don’t want their kids anywhere near. What you have here is 15 tracks that will leave you wondering what happened to that good ol’ AntiChrist that we all used to love.
